MLM leads are the single biggest item sought after by Multi Level Marketing distributors, regardless of which MLM business opportunity they own.

After the euphoria of signing up for a new MLM company wears off, you quickly realize that the next thing you need are leads! You need to identify individuals who have some interest in the business – or at least, have some interest in what the business can do for them.

Traditional Multi Level Marketing has pushed several dysfunctional ways of getting your MLM leads. They’ve done this through the myths that:

  • “Anyone can do this”.
  • “You don’t need business skills to do this. You’re not selling, you’re just sharing.”

Because distributors have largely been thrown into the deep end then, with basic (sometimes less) in business, marketing and sales skills, unscrupulous Multi Level Marketing organizations have basically asked distributors to just splash around as hard as they can, in the deep end. And hopefully that will get some of them across the pool.

Is it any wonder, then, that 97% of all MLM distributors fail within the first year?

strong>How To NOT Do It: 6 Ways that Don’t Work

These are the tactics that have sullied the multi level marketing business model, over the past few decades. The tactics that have made MLM a four-letter word:

  1. Family and Friends as your MLM leads.
We’ve all been here before. Going after your family and friends is such a hit-or-miss tactic. Most often, a miss. Either your family and friends will opt to buy in as customers (or even your down-line) to support you…Or they will become annoyed at your incessant recruitment efforts. And tune you out. At the expense of your personal relationship with them. Note that even the first scenario isn’t good. If they’re getting in purely to support you, at some point they will have buyer’s remorse. Wouldn’t it have been better for them to just give you the money, instead of tying up their time and energy in something they don’t like? (Now if they happen to truly like the product you’re offering, there’s no reason to not sell it to them as customers. But attempting to recruit them for your down-line is a big no-no.)

  2. The 3-foot rule of Multi Level Marketing.
Everyone within 3-feet of you is a prospect! Big mistake. If anyone has ever been prospected this way (I have), it feels sleazy. It feel like entrapment. It causes you to become a walking billboard, with no separation between your business, and who you are as a human being. It also makes you look desperate. Which no potential down-line will find compelling. Don’t compromise yourself in this way.

  3. Shopping at the grocery store for MLM leads.
Same deal here. Don’t pitch your business to the cashier in the check-out line. Or to the lady in the fruit section. These poor people are here for one reason. And that reason is not to hear about an MLM business opportunity.

  4. MLM leads in your neighborhood.
  5. Service Providers (Your barber or hairdresser, your insurance person, etc.)
  6. Incessantly pitching your MLM business opportunity to your MLM CUSTOMERS.
    This is an important one.
Being interested in your product as a customer, is very different from being interested in your opportunity, as an MLM lead. Don’t mix the two up. Of those customers you have, they will all see how much you enjoy your business. And those who want the same for themselves will inquire. You don’t have to beat your customers over the head with your MLM business opportunity.

How to do it: Attraction Marketing

A prospect who seeks you out is INFINITELY more valuable than one you chase down. But how do you get prospects to seek you out? The answer is deceptively simple.

You position yourself as a trusted advisor.

The biggest secret of marketing, is that Teaching Sells. Position yourself as someone teaching people how to fish (versus giving them fish when they want it), and you will be seen as invaluable.

Let’s be frank – most Multi Level Marketing distributors have not chosen an MLM business opportunity because they simple had to have an MLM business opportunity in their life.

No. They chose it as a means to an end. Typically, it is a means to financial freedom.

So what makes an individual select one MLM business opportunity over another?

It’s tempting to identify the product features as the driving factor.

Or, the compensation plan.

Those are just smoke screens.

The number one reason for selecting one MLM business opportunity over another, is the strength of conviction the individual has that this will get them to financial freedom. That they can do THIS MLM business opportunity, and be successful.

And that confident feeling of inevitable success is most driven by their belief in their up-line. The person who will sign them up.

If you are a trusted advisor, teaching your down line how to duplicate your success, how to build their own team, how to start fast and leverage their time and efforts… people will crawl over other business opportunities and mentors, to get to you.

As an MLM distributor, looking to establish yourself as a trusted advisor to these MLM leads… you must do two things:

  1. Sell yourself as a trusted advisor. Who can teach them to build a successful Multi Level Marketing business.
  2. Sell your marketing system. It should be straightforward. It should be duplicable (so that anyone in your downline can duplicate your results).

You want MLM leads? You now have the single most effective way to get them.

Attraction marketing can be practiced in the real world, as well as in the virtual one (online).

Hosting educational seminars, for example, where you impart valuable knowledge to your target audience (people who would want an MLM business) – is very effective tactic. MLM distributors have sometimes organized business luncheons, at which they present on a topic that positions them as a trusted teacher and advisor.

This is a great way to go.

While attraction marketing (positioning yourself as a trusted advisor) can be done offline, doing it online builds immense leverage for you. All of a sudden your audience goes from local, to worldwide. With less effort!

The Internet, particularly in the past few years, has made tools that previously were only available to the largest and most savvy of businesses, available to the regular Joe and Jane! Tools like Twitter, YouTube, EzineArticles, Blogs, Facebook, Squidoo, lead capture pages, email drip campaigns, and several others, have made the Internet the #1 way to duplicate your business.

The Internet isn’t the complete answer. But it is the major tool with which attraction marketing can be practiced.

As an MLM distributor, you have limited time, money and energy with which to build your business.

It’s in your interest, then, to find the most effective ways to get to where you’re going. Attraction marketing finds you qualified MLM leads. Or rather, let’s them find you.
